2 bicyclists suffer fatal bike accident injuries

Two bicyclists were recently killed in two separate car accidents in San Francisco. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee was outraged at the "illegal, irresponsible, outrageous" behavior of the allegedly involved motorists who led to the two women suffering fatal bike accident injuries. However, bicycle safety advocates were critical of the statement, saying that his words were hollow because they have yet to be fortified by any effective action.

The two women who were killed on a recent Wednesday in late June are, unofficially, the 14th and 15th bicyclists struck and killed on the streets of San Francisco since 2011. The first woman was struck in Golden Gate Park. Passersby of the second accident detained the driver who was reportedly involved in the accident in order to keep him from fleeing the scene.

The first cyclist, a 41-year-old woman, was struck and killed around 6 p.m and the second victim, a 26-year-old woman, was killed around 8:30 p.m. that same day. A 32-year-old man driving an SUV reportedly ran a red light, striking the second cyclist as she was pedaling through the intersection, police said. The driver continued driving until he hit a parked vehicle at a gas station, according to officials, and a citizen ensured that the man stayed at the scene until officers arrived. They then took him into custody. The driver who hit the first cyclist had not been found as of the time of this report.

Bicycle accidents may occur less frequently than car accidents, but the damage that cyclists often bear due to bike accident injuries typically greatly exceeds that suffered by motorists. If a cyclist is involved in an accident, he or she could be in serious financial trouble. When an accident results in the cyclist's death, loved ones may be left with hospital bills and end-of-life expenses, such as funeral and burial costs. A personal injury or wrongful death suit filed in a California civil court with the help of an experienced personal injury attorney is often the course of action that most victims or the victims' families choose to take when tragic, senseless accidents like these occur.
