Two girls suffer injuries after pedestrian accident in California

A walk home ended in tragedy for two young girls. The girls became the victims in a pedestrian accident as they walked along the sidewalk in California. The woman who hit them is now facing criminal charges.

The girls are 10 and 12 years old. They were at an intersection around 6 p.m. on a Saturday. A 30-year-old driver swerved off the roadway and ended up hitting both of the girls. That driver later told authorities she fell asleep as she was driving home from work.

The younger girl sustained what was called life-threatening injuries. The 12-year-old was also injured, but the injuries are not deemed as life-threatening. The driver left the scene after hitting the children and returned about 15 or 20 minutes later with her father. She was arrested for felony hit-and-run and also charged with a felony DUI. She was jailed with a bond set at $1 million.

The family of these girls may have a lot to contend with as the children recover from the injuries sustained in this pedestrian accident. Those children may also have to deal with on-going, perhaps permanent, medical needs or disability related to the pedestrian accident. In California, the parents or guardians of minor victims can pursue a personal injury case in a civil court if the driver who hit them is deemed liable for the accident. The criminal charges in this case may help those families prove liability if they choose to go forward with legal action. If successful, they may possibly garner a monetary settlement that would prove useful as the medical bills mount.
