Remember these three key areas of truck driving law

Driving past a truck on the highway can be an intimidating and scary experience, even if you have done it thousands of times before. These big, powerful vehicles can cause immense amounts of damage, both to your vehicle and to you and the people inside your vehicle. It is for these reasons that the truck industry is strictly regulated, and that truck drivers and companies need to abide by many different rules to ensure everyone's safety.

Let's take a look at a few areas where the trucking industry needs to remained focused and diligent, lest they be at fault for an accident:

  • Conduct of the driver: There are clear laws for how a truck driver must handle himself or herself. Any deviations from this standard of behavior could make the truck driver or company liable for an accident.
  • Rest laws: This is a crucial element to the trucking industry. Drivers need a certain amount of rest between shifts. If the driver doesn't get that rest, or if the truck company aids and abets the driver's lack of sleep, then both parties could be in a lot of trouble.
  • Specifics of the truck: There are a lot of things that could be wrong with the truck itself, or its cargo. For example, what if the cargo is improperly loaded, making it more likely for a truck to overturn? What if the truck had too much cargo and, thus, was over the weight restrictions? What if the cargo was hazardous or illegal in some way? What if the truck itself had not been properly maintained prior to going out on a trip?
