Drugged driving problem not just about marijuana

We all know that driving under the influence of alcohol is dangerous. Similarly, most people understand that you should not get behind the wheel if you are under the influence of marijuana. A growing, but likely less understood problem, in California is the threat of drugged drivers who are under the influence of other substances, including prescription medications.

According to the City Attorney’s Office in San Diego, an increasing number of people are getting behind the wheel when under the influence of some type of drug.

In fact, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that approximately 65 percent of all drugged driving cases in San Diego involved a motorist who was under the influence of a prescription medication. Some prescription medications that could cause a drugged driving charge include antidepressants and painkillers, according to the Union-Tribune.

Surprisingly, only between 5 and 10 percent of all drugged driving cases involve illegal drugs, like meth or cocaine, according to San Diego’s Deputy City Attorney. The other 25 to 30 percent of drugged driving incidents involve marijuana.

When a motorist gets behind the wheel when he or she is under the influence of any type of drug that could impair his or her ability to operate the vehicle, every other individual on the road is put at risk. When a drugged driver causes a collision, the other people injured in the crash should not be held accountable for the damage done or the medical expenses incurred from serious injuries. In such cases, a personal injury attorney can help.
