Part II: Tips to stay safe when riding a motorcycle in CA

When a motorcycle collides with another vehicle - whether it is a car or truck - the injuries suffered by the motorcyclist are usually the most severe. One of the factors that makes riding a motorcycle so enjoyable - having few barriers between you and the rest of the world - also makes it particularly hazardous.

So, before you ride a motorcycle in California this summer, here are some tips to help you stay safe.

Wear a helmet. In California, all motorcyclists are required to wear a helmet approved by the Department of Transportation. According to a study conducted by the University of Southern California, wearing a helmet is the most significant factor that can prevent a motorcyclist from suffering a head or neck injury in a crash. In fact, motorcyclists who choose not to wear a helmet are 40 percent more likely to die from a head injury in a motorcycle collision.

Follow all traffic laws. In other words, drive safely. Drive within the posted speed limit. Don't ride a motorcycle after consuming alcohol or other drugs that would affect your ability to ride safely.

Watch out for other motorists. Even though there have been lots of public awareness campaigns warning other drivers to start seeing motorcyclists, the reality is that many people are still not aware enough when on the road. Rather than assuming another driver will spot you and steer clear, ride as though motorists are not paying attention.

If the worst should happen and you are involved in a motorcycle crash, don't waste any time in seeking medical care. The sooner you are checked out by a doctor, the better the chance of a full recovery.
