Cellphone use dangerous for pedestrians

We've all heard how dangerous it is to use a cellphone while driving. However, did you know that cellphone use can be just as dangerous for pedestrians in the United States?

Cellphone use contributes to many pedestrian accidents in the country. In fact, pedestrian accidents where cellphones were involved have increased significantly from 2005 to 2010, according to a recent study.

Reports show that the number of pedestrian accidents involving cellphone use increase from 256 to 1506 from 2005 to 2010, which is almost a ten-fold increase. The rate of pedestrian accidents involving cellphones is only expected to increase as cellphone use and other electronic use increases.

Cellphone use plays a contributing role in many accidents and poses a serious safety concern. Pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings, especially when they are walking near high-traffic areas. Even though pedestrians may check their surroundings a majority of the time, just a few seconds of looking down at your cellphone could result in a catastrophic accident.

Pedestrian accidents are a serious issue in California. Distracted pedestrians can be seriously injured or killed in an accident. However, it is important to remind everyone to be careful on the road.

This means that drivers need to look out for pedestrians and be extra cautious around crosswalks and areas known to have a high volume of pedestrians. Drivers should know that they can be held liable for accidents involving pedestrians, even if the pedestrian may also be at fault.

Victims injured in a pedestrian accident should recognize that they have rights. Working with an attorney can help you understand your rights and explore your legal options.
