Bicycle fatalities a very real concern for California residents

Bicycling is a way of commuting for many San Diego residents. For others, while they may drive to work, riding a bike is an enjoyable pastime and way to get some exercise. Considering the fact that there are so many bicyclists in the San Diego area though, learning about the spike in bicyclist fatalities may be quite alarming to some.

The Governors Highway Safety Association recently focused on bicycle safety, analyzing data from across the country and releasing the report Spotlight on Highway Safety: Bicyclist Safety. According to this report, bicyclist fatalities increased in 22 states, with just six states representing more than half of the fatalities. California was named one of those six states.

In looking at why there are proportionally more fatal bike accidents in California, as compared to some other states across the country, the author of the study points out the fact that California is a state with more urban areas. Basically, the more people in the area and the more people riding bicycles, the more accidents.

The report also pointed to another interesting trend: Adults over the age of 20 make up almost 85 percent of those killed in bicycling accidents. Of all those killed in 2012, men also made up close to 75 percent of the fatalities.

So does this mean that if you are a 30-year-old man in San Diego riding a bicycle you will get into an accident? Not necessarily, as accidents can happen to anyone. However, if you are someone who ends up getting hurt in a bicycle accident, or loses a loved one in a bike crash, the statistics and likelihood of the accident can't turn back the hands of time. Rather, moving forward, make sure to know your legal rights in terms of holding any negligent parties accountable.
