Bicycle accident leaves La Jolla man paralyzed

Mild temperatures allow San Diego area residents to enjoy biking year-round. Biking is not only a great form of exercise, but also a practical and environmentally-friendly mode of transportation. However, when it comes to sharing the road with cars and motor vehicles, biking can also be extremely dangerous.

A 49-year-old La Jolla man was recently seriously injured while biking on Fiesta Island when he was hit by a car traveling in the wrong direction. The man is a member of the San Diego Bicycle Club and the accident occurred as he and other fellow members enjoyed a weekly 30-mile bike ride.

As the group of bicyclists traveled along Fiesta Island, a car sped towards them traveling in the wrong direction. While several others bicyclists also suffered injuries including bruises, cuts and road rash; the 49-year-old man was the first to be hit by the car and therefore the most seriously injured.

The man's wife recently discussed the bicycle accident and her husband's devastating injuries which include several broken ribs, a lacerated spleen, a broken clavicle and a spinal cord injury which has left him paralyzed from the chest down. Today, the father of two is fighting for his life. He will never be able to bike or walk again and will require assistance to accomplish even basic everyday tasks.

The female driver of the car that crashed into the man and his fellow bicyclists had been drinking and will likely face criminal charges. The man and his family may also choose to file a civil lawsuit against the driver and her insurance company to recover damages related to permanent disability, lost wages and past and future medical expenses.
