Hand injuries common during Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration. From family barbeques to trips to the beach with friends, celebrations often begin early in the day and go late into the evening. For many, the holiday is synonymous with fireworks. Although festive and fun, it is important for those who are using fireworks to be aware of their dangers.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that there were an estimated 8,700 injuries connected to firework use in 2012 alone. Hand injuries are the most common and many of these victims are children. Injuries can be sustained in a variety of ways, with common causes including lighting a firework improperly, playing with fireworks after they've been used, holding fireworks in one's hands to light or after lit and using faulty fireworks.

Steps can be taken to help reduce the risk of injury connected to firework use. Buying the products from a reputable dealer can help increase the safety of the firework as well as making sure that only one firework is lit at a time. It is also important to only allow adults to light the fireworks and that they are lit on a flat surface.

Unfortunately, even when precautions are taken accidents can happen. If an accident is caused by the reckless or negligent act of another and that accident leads to an injury, the victim may be eligible to receive compensation. This could help cover the cost of medical and rehabilitative expenses.

If you were injured, contact a personal injury attorney to discuss your legal options.
