Rage may be a factor in Spring Valley motorcycle fatal

Driver distraction is getting to be one of the biggest concerns related to traffic safety. So many accidents happen because the driver of a vehicle has his or her mind on things other than the task at hand. The result can be that someone is seriously hurt or killed. Pain and suffering can only follow.

The consequences can be particularly devastating if the accident involves a motorcycle. Chances are better than even that the person or persons on the motorcycle will suffer the worst.

Here's a question for you. What comes to your mind when you hear the phrase distracted driving?

Chances are your thoughts turn immediately to texting while driving. But distraction can occur for all sorts of reasons, and authorities in Spring Valley may have reason to explore whether driver anger led to distraction and the death of motorcyclist this morning.

The California Highway Patrol hasn't said whether anger may have played a role, but witnesses at a restaurant say the driver of the car was "in a rage" shortly before he pulled out into traffic and collided with the motorcycle. The rider on the cycle died from his injuries. The driver of the car was not hurt.

Authorities say the fatal crash happened around 6:20 a.m. on Jamacha Boulevard near Sweetwater Road. According to the CHP, the driver of the car was just leaving a shopping center and was attempting to make a left turn and apparently collided with the motorcyclist coming from the left.

An employee at a nearby McDonald's says the car's driver had become angry when he was told that the store's coffee machine was out of order. She says he walked out of the restaurant in that state and the accident happened moments later.

A TV news crew says the CHP questioned the driver at the scene, but there is no word that any citations were issued. There's also no word as to whether investigators asked him about the restaurant visit.
