UC San Diego wants to send distracted drivers to driving school

It is no secret that law enforcement agencies across the country are struggling to keep distracted drivers off the roads. Drivers know that distracted driving is often a matter of life and death. They know that there are criminal and civil penalties for doing it, but they continue to text and drive, email and drive, and chat on cellphones, resulting in car accidents. The stubborn persistence of such tendencies has stumped those who want to eradicate distracted driving.

The University of California-San Diego may have come up with a solution. The university believes that a class on distracted driving can help drivers kick distracted driving habits for good.

Beginning in January, free one-hour classes on the dangers of distracted driving will be offered by the university at various San Diego workplaces. During the classes, safety professionals will share information about cellphone laws, true stories about distracted driving, and some of the most recent research on the topic. Some of this research shows that distracted driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. For example, talking on a cellphone - even a handheld device - makes a person four times more likely to get into a crash. Texting makes a person up to 16 times more likely to be involved in a collision.

The University of California hopes that by providing drivers with a solid education on distracted driving, drivers might become motivated to change their ways.

Hopefully, education will prove to be a successful method to change the culture's attitude toward distracted driving; the current resistance that drivers have to focusing on the roads is costing lives across California.
