San Diego pedestrian accident results in fatality

A 57-year-old San Diego man died tragically last weekend when he was hit by a suspected drunk driver. The man was reportedly crossing Mission Bay Drive in Pacific Beach when a Volkswagen Beetle driven by a 54-year-old woman hit him. It is unclear whether the driver saw the man before she hit him.

He incurred several serious injuries and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment. A news report indicates that he was pronounced brain dead at the hospital a little less than one day after the accident occurred.

The driver of the Volkswagen was reportedly arrested after the crash and was suspected to have been driving drunk. The Volkswagen driver's teenage son was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians are often very serious, as pedestrians do not have anything protecting their bodies when they are hit by a car. As this accident demonstrates, accident fatalities do not necessarily occur at the scene of the collision. While many pedestrian accidents may result in an immediate fatality, some lead to serious injuries that the pedestrian just cannot survive.

The family of the pedestrian killed in this accident is likely still in shock and may be struggling to accept their loved one's sudden loss. In addition to dealing with the emotional pain of losing a loved one, this man's family is likely facing expensive medical bills. Covering these bills as well as funeral costs may be overwhelming for a family. However, in wrongful death cases, families can often seek compensation for expenses incurred as a result of the fatal accident.
