California insurer will stop covering some dog bites

Insurance companies make decisions that impact many people in a variety of ways. For instance, if an insurance company raises rates, policy owners will feel the effect of the price increase. Now, Californians who are insured through Farmers Group will not be able to insure several breeds of dogs through their homeowners' insurance policy.

Homeowners who have policies through Farmers Group will notice this change when they have to renew their policies. The change impacts owners of pit bulls, Rottweilers, and wolf hybrids.

Reactions to this announcement have been mixed. Supporters of these breeds may disagree with Farmers Group's move, but anyone who has suffered a dog bite by one of these breeds or who knows someone who has likely understands how serious these bites can be. Suffering a dog bite is not necessarily a short-term issue; a bite can lead to more serious injuries or illnesses and can result in a person losing his or her life.

A representative from Farmers explained that the insurance company noticed that these "three breeds accounted for more than 25% of dog bite claims." As the number of dog bites and dog attacks continues to increase, insurance companies face large bills for covering the effects of these dogs' attacks.

If a person is bit by a pit bull, Rottweiler, or wolf hybrid, understanding the right to file a premises liability suit is important. While this new policy by Farmers could impact the source of payments after dog bites, any person who has been hurt by a dog deserves to make a full recovery and sometimes this recovery can cost a lot. Consulting a strong personal injury attorney may be beneficial after a dog bite incident.
