Did singer's jacket protect him from serious motorcycle injury?

For many years, motorcyclists, traffic safety advocates and everyone in between have been debating the appropriateness and efficacy of universal motorcycle helmet laws, which require every biker, regardless of age or level of experience, to wear a helmet at all times when on a motorcycle. Pro-helmet advocates say that helmets are the only way to protect motorcyclists who from serious injury and death. Motorcyclists say that they should be able to decide whether or not to wear a helmet for themselves.

While helmets are the hot topic among motorcyclists and safety advocates, little attention is paid to other methods of protecting motorcyclists from other, less-severe (but equally as traumatizing) injuries suffered in motorcycle accidents, such as serious lacerations, cuts and bruises. But a recent California motorcycle accident involving a popular Disney star may change that fact.

The motorcycle accident involved Logan Henderson, a singer and actor who was made famous by Disney's "Big Time Rush." Henderson was riding his motorcycle in Southern California when a car, apparently not seeing the motorcycle, suddenly turned directly in front of the bike. In order to avoid a head-on collision with the car, Henderson was forced to quickly swerve his motorcycle.

The force of his swerving motion caused Henderson to lose control of and be thrown from his motorcycle. Fortunately, the singer only suffered cuts and bruises on his back. He later attributed the relative minority of his injuries to the designer jacket he was wearing at the time of the crash. It is not known whether he was also wearing a helmet.

So is it now possible that leather jackets will become hotly debated as a new and essential method of motorcycle injury prevention? Probably not. However, the accident makes it clear that a lot goes into protecting motorcyclists from serious injury, and while helmets are important, they are not the only thing that can prevent motorcycle accident injuries.
