Motorcycle accident deaths increase in California

According to preliminary data from the California Highway Patrol, motorcycle accident deaths are on the rise in San Diego and throughout the state. This increase reverses a three-year decline in motorcycle-related fatalities, indicating that drivers in the state may need a reminder of how to drive safely and cautiously around motorcycles and other smaller vehicles.

Specifically, the CHP's Interstate Traffic Records System reports that motorcycle accident fatalities increased by 20 percent from 2010 to 2011. Previously, motorcycle deaths had been on the decline since 2008. Because California is home to more than one million motorcyclists, this is an issue that needs to be addressed in order to prevent further fatalities. As such, the CHP has offered several motorcycle crash prevention tips for the drivers of cars, motorcycles and all other motor vehicles.

First, the CHP advises that motorists drive with extra caution in intersections, which is where a large percent of crashes involving cars and motorcycles take place. Before making a left turn, drivers should stop, look for traffic, and then look once again for motorcyclists. Before long, making that second look will become a habit that requires no additional thought.

In addition, the CHP says that speed is another large factor behind many motorcycle accident fatalities. When a car or motorcycle is traveling at a high speed at the time of a collision, it is speed that can turn the crash from one that causes injury to one that causes death.

If you are a motorcyclist who has been injured in a collision with a motor vehicle, you may be able to receive damages for medical expenses, lost wages and the like. An experienced personal injury attorney can help you determine if a lawsuit is the best route for you.
