Helmet light system aims to prevent motorcycle crashes

Every year, more than 4,500 people are killed in motorcycle-related accidents in the U.S., according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And as we mentioned in a recent post on our San Diego personal injury blog, motorcycle accident deaths are actually on the rise in California, increasing by 20 percent from 2010 to 2011. As such, it seems that more needs to be done to promote motorcycle safety to drivers and motorcyclists alike.

Traffic safety agencies and officials have long focused on the behavior of drivers and their responsibility to actively avoid causing collisions with motorcyclists, most notably with the "Start Seeing Motorcycles" campaign. And while many motorcycle accidents are caused by driver inattention and neglect, there are numerous situations in which drivers are simply unable to see motorcyclists until it is too late.

So it seems that, in order to truly and permanently reduce the number of motorcycle crashes that take place in the U.S., motorcycle visibility needs to become a top priority of traffic safety officials throughout the country.

Along this line, one entrepreneur has developed an innovative new motorcycle helmet system that integrates the motorcycle's brake lights and turn signals into a light on the back of the helmet. The light will be visible to motorists, alerting them not only that there is a motorcycle on the road in front of them but also keeping them apprised of the motorcyclist's actions and directions.

It is not yet known when this helmet system will become available to the public, but that day will hopefully come in the relatively near future.
