Last week, the son of actor Ryan O'Neal suffered non-life-threatening injuries after he was involved in a head-on car accident in San Diego. Police are not sure of the reason for the accident, which involved a van and a car driven by 46-year-old Griffin O'Neal, but they are continuing to investigate the incident.
According to police reports, the auto accident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. last Tuesday. O'Neal was driving his car on San Pasqual Road, near the border of San Diego and Escondido, when he suddenly and inexplicably drove into oncoming traffic. He collided with a van that was traveling in the opposite direction.
After the collision, O'Neal became trapped in his vehicle, and had to be freed by San Diego Fire Department emergency responders. He was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with moderate injuries, and a hospital spokesperson later stated that he had been treated in the emergency room and released. The driver of the van suffered minor injuries, and was also treated at Palomar Medical Center and released. No one else was in either vehicle.
San Diego police continue to investigate the accident, according to Sgt. David Jennings, and are looking into drugs or alcohol as possible contributing factors. O'Neal has not been charged with any criminal offenses.
Tuesday was a rough day for the O'Neal family. Earlier that day, Griffin's half-brother, Redmond O'Neal, was arrested in Santa Monica after police officers reportedly found heroin in his vehicle during a routine traffic stop. Because Redmond is currently on probation from a previous drug arrest, he was placed in a California jail with no bail.
