Red light runner causes fatal accident in San Francisco

Several recent reports have highlighted the potential life-saving benefits of red light cameras. The camera's proponents argue that drivers who know their actions are being watched will be less likely to drive recklessly through an intersection. A good example of exactly this sort of reckless driving occurred late last week, when a driver speeding through red lights caused a fatal collision in Northern California.

The crash occurred in Inner Richmond-a neighborhood of San Francisco-in the early hours of the morning. Eyewitnesses describe seeing an Audi driving irresponsibly along Geary Boulevard, as the driver violated speed limits and ignored the red light signals in his path.

The Audi operator's careless and negligent driving eventually caused it to crash into a Mazda which happened to cross its path. Local police report that, despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the Mazda's driver died before he could receive hospitalized medical attention.

The Audi's driver was also injured in the collision and, after being treated, is now in the custody of local authorities.

Investigators are currently in the process of discovering whether drugs or alcohol were motivating factors behind this driver's reckless behavior.

Following the victim's death, his family will be eligible to file a wrongful death suit against the careless driver. Wrongful death cases are brought against a plaintiff whose gross negligence has caused the death of another. The potential compensation could help the victim's family deal with the financial burden associated with their loved one's death. The Audi's driver could also face vehicular manslaughter criminal charges, depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
