Two Vehicle Collision Believed to be DUI-Related

An early morning collision in La Mesa that injured a number of individuals is being investigated as a suspected DUI. The auto accident occurred a little after 1 a.m. near the intersection of Baltimore Drive and El Cajon Boulevard. In all, six people were transported to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

According to police reports, the accident occurred when a mini van with six occupants ran a red light and collided with a second vehicle. The van apparently took the worst of the collision and overturned. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured in the crash.

When police arrived on the scene three of the van's six occupants, including the driver, had fled the accident scene. The driver of the second vehicle was nowhere to be found at first, but later returned after police officers had arrived. When he returned, the second driver told officers that he had run away because one of the van passengers had said something about having a gun. A search of the van and the nearby area did not turn up any weapons.

The police conducted a search and eventually found the van driver and the other passengers that had run away. The driver and all five of his passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Upon his release from the hospital, the van driver was taken into custody by police and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
