Drunk Driver Fleeing Police Causes Serious Injuries in Crash

A woman driving under the influence and fleeing from police allegedly caused a serious auto accident in Valencia Park early Thursday morning. This incident provides another example of how innocent people are sometimes injured during police pursuits.

According to San Diego police, a 31-year-old woman was being pursued by police officers in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon call. The chase began near the 7100 block of Astoria Street where the woman refused to pull over for officers. The chase then lasted several miles until the fleeing woman hit another vehicle that was attempting to make a left turn at Imperial Avenue and Valencia Parkway.

The vehicle struck by the fleeing woman was being driven by a woman in her twenties. Both women suffered injuries in the crash and were taken to a trauma center in the area. As of the last reporting, the 31-year-old was in serious condition, and the younger woman was listed in critical condition.

Police arrested the older woman after the crash before sending her to the hospital in an ambulance. According to police, she is likely to be charged with felony driving under the influence and a felony-level failure to yield. In addition to civil liability the older woman may have for the injuries of the younger woman, she may potentially be charged criminally for causing those injuries as well.

There is no indication here that the police did anything wrong in this case, but incidents like this should serve as a reminder that fleeing vehicles and police cars in pursuit can pose a serious danger to other cars on the road.
