Latest Toyota Recall Affects 1.53 Million Vehicles

Toyota is in the news again with a massive car recall, this one affecting some 1.53 million vehicles worldwide - 740,000 of which are owned in the United States. The recall was implemented following the discovery of defects in the brake master cylinder and fuel pump on certain Lexus, Avalon and Highlander models.

Toyota was quick to point out that no auto accidents, injuries, or fatalities have been associated with the defects. For now, the recall seems completely pre-emptive.

It's a far cry from earlier this year, when Toyota began to recall the first of some 10 million vehicles due to reports of devastating car accidents and uncontrolled acceleration in some models.

Since then, Toyota has been working against the tide, struggling to convince government regulators and the American public that its vehicles are safe.

While Toyota has been the biggest target of public discontent over vehicle safety, a number of other manufacturers have announced large scale recalls, albeit much smaller than Toyota's total. Recently, a van rollover on the East Coast has shone a harsh light on the safety of Ford's 15-passenger vans.

There has been no recall in that case, but NHTSA has released a warning for drivers operating larger vehicles and a lawsuit has been filed in relation to the fatal 15-passenger van crash.

Individuals affected by the recent Toyota recall should expect to be contacted soon with information regarding a fix.
