Man Bites San Diego Police Dog

A man is in jail on suspicion of car theft after being captured by a San Diego police dog yesterday. The dog did not get his man easily, however. The suspect punched, choked, and bit the dog before policemen arrived to reinforce their partner and put the suspect in handcuffs.

The incident started early Monday morning when a man was seen tampering with a vehicle in University Heights. San Diego police Lt. Todd Jarvis said that a man was seen taking a metal object out of a truck, but put it back after a witness confronted him. Police were called to the scene, but the man had driven off in a stolen Mitsubishi. The officers spotted a car matching the description and followed it, but it sped away. They found it again and followed it until the man, Michael Douglas Schuh, jumped out of the car and ran into a canyon.

The police officers followed him into the canyon, but he was hiding. They called to the suspect, telling him they would release a police dog if he didn't turn himself in. Schuh continued hiding, so the officers released police dog Ajax. Ajax found Schuh within seconds, but Schuh wasn't giving up that easily. They started to struggle and ending up rolling several times down a canyon hillside, with the dog biting Schuh on the arms and Schuh punching the dog. When officers caught up with the duo, they found Schuh trying to choke Ajax and saw him bite him on the head.

Ajax wasn't injured. The officers brought Schuh to the hospital where he was treated for dog bites and cuts. Schuh was then booked into jail on suspicion of receiving stolen property and auto theft, obstructing an officer, and possession of burglary tools.
